Giannoulias advises women to "recession-proof their portfolios"

March 4, 2008

With the possibility of a recession in the near future, Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias gave financial advice to more than 200 women at this year’s Smart Women Smart Money conference in Springfield today.

Giannoulias advised women to keep three to six months of living expenses in their savings account and to invest in “target-date” 401(k) plans that adjust according to their age, not market conditions.

“The message I’d like you to take away today is that it is important to give to yourself as much as you give of yourself,” Giannoulias.

Not only did Giannoulias give investment advice, he also honored two local women their accomplishments in growing their businesses and being strong advocates for financial literacy.

Giannoulias gave the 2008 Woman on the Rise award to Michelle Tjelmeland, owner of E-websmart and co-founder and board chairman of the Cochlear Implant Awareness Foundation.

The 2008 Woman of Excellence Award went Jo Ellen Keim, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Hanson Professional Services Inc.

Smart Women Smart Money symposiums, now in their eighth year, present a unique opportunity for women to learn about current financial issues, network with other women, and showcase their businesses and organizations.
